Kashmir: Lockdown under Lockdown

Internet has been snapped out once again from the Kashmir valley. Journalists are facing tremendous hardships to file their reports and sending photos. Although, this is not a new phenomenon in the valley.  Amidst this, photojournalist Sheikh Yamin who cover for The Background from Kashmir was able to send these photos of lockdown Srinagar.

Government imposed strict restrictions today in Kashmir after the killing of top Hizbul Mujahidin commander Riyaz Naikoo in Beighpora village of Pulwama district on Wednesday. The village is about 40 kilometres from Srinagar.

The 35 year old Naikoo, who was carrying Rs 12 lakh on his head,  was the top recruiter of local people into the militant organisation.

Naikoo’s killing is considered as the biggest counter-insurgency achievement of the year so far, which comes days after militants carried out a deadly attack in North Kashmir’s Handwara, killing five security personnel including a colonel and a major rank army officer.

After the encounter DGP Dilbagh Singh addressed the media.

Masrat Zahra, who was recently called for a police investigation for her work, tweeted

Below are the photos of Srinagar in the afternoon (7 April 2020) .
