New Delhi: The Supreme Court today imposed a fine of Rs 20 lakh on the West Bengal government for imposing a ‘virtual’ ban on public screening of “Bhobishyoter Bhoot”, a satirical film directed by Anik Dutta.
The Court had been hearing a plea from the producers who had alleged that the movie was taken down from most of the theatres in the state at the behest of the authorities.
A Bench headed by Justice D.Y Chandrachud said the fine amount shall be given to the producers and cinema hall owners as compensation for their right to freedom of speech and expression.
The film was released on 15 February this year. It revolves around a group of ghosts who try to remain relevant in contemporary times. It was taken off from all the multiplexes and single-screen theatres the next day.
