Kashmir on edge: Article 370 to be scrapped; J&K to split into 2 Union Territories

The Background, New Delhi & Srinagar: The government today introduced a resolution to remove Article 370, which provides special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Further, Home Minister Amit Shah has also introduced a Bill bifurcating the state of Jammu and Kashmir. There will be Union Territory of Ladakh and Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

President Ram Nath Kovind has issued a presidential order on Jammu and Kashmir, exercising his power under Clause 1 of Article 370. This presidential order has done away sections under Article 35A, which gives the state’s government the power to define permanent residents and give them special rights and privileges with regard to employment, acquiring immovable property, scholarships and other forms of aid in the state.

While BJP leader Ram Madhav described it a ‘glorious day’, former J&K Chief Minister and PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti said this was the “darkest day in Indian democracy.

National Conference leader and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also said that the decision was a “total betrayal of the trust of people of J&K” and will have “dire consequences”, NDTV reported.

The CPIM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury has said that the move will further deepen the ‘alienation’.

The Modi government ‘burnt the constitutional and historical bridge that connected J&K with the rest of India’ by effectively scrapping Articles 370 and 35A, said CPIML (Liberation) leader Dipankar Bhattacharya.

Pakistan has issued a strong reaction condemning this announcement. It Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement said,

“No unilateral step by the Government of India can change this disputed status [of Jammu and Kashmir], as enshrined in the United Nations Security Council resolutions,” the statement says. “Nor will this ever be acceptable to the people of Jammu & Kashmir and Pakistan. As the party to this international dispute, Pakistan will exercise all possible options to counter the illegal steps.”

Congress MP Ghulam Nabi Azad says, “A border state, which is culturally, geographically, historically and politically different was bound together by Article 370”. “Drunk in power and to get votes, BJP [government] scrapped 3-4 things. They’ve cut off head of the country. Political parties will fight and stand with Jammu and Kashmir.”

The Left parties jointly took out processions in different parts of the country. In New Delhi, there was a joint demonstration by CPI, CPIM and CPIML (Liberation). The leaders alleged that the Modi government has secretively and conspiratorially abrogated Article 370 and bifurcated the state.  Sitaram Yechury (CPIM), Dipankar Bhattacharya (CPIML Liberation), D. Raja (CPI) and others spoke at the demonstration.
