COVID-19: Significant jump in confirmed cases in India; thousands of destitute on road

The Background

The third day of national lockdown in India showed a significant jump in the number of confirmed cases. India COVID-19 tracker says that the number has already crossed 1000 although the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Affairs website put down the cases to 819. The death toll is now 19.

Globally, number of deceased is 30, 249. It is climbing and climbing at an alarming rate. In Italy the death toll has crossed 10,000. It stands at 10,023. In Spain, it is 5812. Across the world total confirmed case is 649, 904. Recovered 137, 283.

Amidst lockdown, India is witnessing a catastrophe as thousands of migrant workers are moving all around the country. There is no proper transportation to take them to their home. They are walking with no food. This is a horrible and heartbreaking situation unfolding before our eyes. The ineptitude of governments, the central or concerned states alike, is stark. After days of dillydallying by the Centre and the Delhi and Uttar Pradesh state governments, an evacuation plan is finally being implemented.

This is the situation at the Delhi-UP border during the day.

Millions of people are destitute now. To avoid one disaster, did the Indian government created another disaster?

A PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking directions to the Centre to take appropriate steps to alleviate the trouble faced by migrant workers in the midst of the nationwide Coronavirus lockdown. The matter is likely to be heard by the Apex Court on Monday, March 30, reports Bar and Bench.
